HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) — A popular playground at Ritter Park has been shut down after safety violations were found.

According to the Greater Huntington Parks and Recreation District, the “Alice in Wonderland” playground has been closed after safety violations were found.

Inspectors from the National Playground Safety Institute found numerous Priority 1 hazards at the playground during an inspection Thursday.

According to the GHPRD, a Priority 1 hazard is a readily accessible hazard that would cause an accident resulting in serious injury or possibly death.

A Priority 1 hazard also means the area must be closed.

GHPRD Executive Director Kevin Brady tells WSAZ the unsafe areas have been closed and fenced.

According to the GHPRD, 6 new playgrounds have been installed in the last five years throughout the city that meet or exceed safety standards.
